With a population of nearly 111,000, Nampa, Idaho, is a place where people at every stage of life can thrive. Whether a native Idahoan like Alice Pyle or a transplant like Mauricio Ruiz, the city lays a foundation for the perfect Pacific Northwest lifestyle. Here’s what these residents have to say about life in Nampa.

Making Connections in Nampa

Pyle is the career development coordinator at the Wyakin Foundation. Headquartered in Boise, the national foundation assists veterans who are pursuing education as they transition into civilian careers. She says Nampa’s commitment to community is evident not just at her workplace, but throughout the region.

“The Nampa community has such a big heart for others,” she says. “A majority of the people that I look up to in the business community, I met through my time attending and working at the Boys & Girls Club. If you see someone involved in the community in Nampa, you will continue to see it for years to come.”

Ruiz gets to experience this interconnectedness firsthand as a business relationship officer at Idaho Central Credit Union.

“I get to know incredible business owners and learn about their unique story, business and goals for the future,” he says. “We are committed to helping our members achieve financial success, and I believe that this can only be accomplished through building strong, long-lasting relationships.”

Ruiz was born in Tijuana, Mexico, but has lived in Nampa since he was 8 years old. Today, Ruiz has children of his own and has put down roots.

“Nampa is a great place to raise a family because it’s safe, affordable and has great community leaders that care and have a passion for the people of Nampa and its students,” he says. “I just became a U.S. citizen, and I am so proud!”

Life in Nampa Brings Sense of Community

Ongoing development in Nampa has been one of the reasons Pyle says she chooses to remain in her hometown. When she’s not at work, her favorite places to be are downtown, on the greenway or at the dog park – places that have all evolved for the better over the years.

“I may be biased, but the Nampa dog park is the best in the Treasure Valley, in my opinion,” she says. “With two dogs, we frequent the dog park quite a bit and recommend it to people I meet who live outside of Nampa.”

Ruiz echoes Pyle’s sentiment about Nampa’s beautiful parks. The 44-acre Lakeview Park, which includes a 1,000-seat ampitheater, a BMX track and a rose garden, is a particular favorite.

“I think we are lucky to have such a big park in Nampa,” he says. “We take it for granted. It also just got some great upgrades!”

Pyle has a few recommendations for hitting the town, as well. The Downtown Nampa Community Association has a variety of events that are fun to attend for any age, she says.

Mesa Tacos + Tequila, Holy Cow!, Messenger Pizza, Swirl Wine Shop & Lounge and PreFunk Beer Bar are among her go-to spots to spend time with friends.

Ruiz’s top pick for Mexican cuisine is Jalapeño’s Bar & Grill, but he appreciates the newest downtown digs, as well. “Downtown Nampa is growing,” Ruiz says. “You can find tacos, burgers, breweries and wineries, and ice cream.”

Career Options Galore in the Region

Nampa’s economic spurt with industrial and advanced manufacturing companies certainly enhances a young professional’s access to upward mobility. Local leadership institutions like the Nampa Chamber of Commerce offer programming geared toward attracting and retaining talent. Other organizations available in Nampa offer more specialized connections.

“I am a board member for the Idaho Latino Young Professionals, which launched in Nampa,” Ruiz says. “This organization strives to create a pathway for Latino young professionals to succeed in their careers.”

Pyle says the region’s diverse collection of smaller employers creates opportunities to dabble in a myriad of job pathways.

“Nampa is a fantastic place for professional growth whether you work in Nampa or live in Nampa but travel outside of the city for work. The business community is very well connected throughout the state and great for networking and connecting with other professionals,” she says.

“Nampa is a great landing spot because you are roughly an hour away from the mountains, about 30 minutes from Boise and near everything in between. You get the best of both worlds, but with a smaller city that loves its community.”
