A Legacy of Leadership in the Madison, WI, Region
As the executive manager of Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison, Dan Brown has emerged as a leader not only in the gaming industry but in the broader Madison, WI, Region, as well. Brown began his career in 1993 after relocating with his family to Wisconsin to work at Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells.
Over the years, his dedication and experience propelled him through various roles, including director of casino operations, assistant general manager and ultimately general manager, overseeing the flagship casino of the Ho-Chunk Nation.
His leadership extends well beyond the casino floor. From 2007 to 2011, he served as the vice president of the Ho-Chunk Nation, contributing to the strategic direction and decision-making processes of the tribal government.
As the head of Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison, he doesn’t merely steer the ship; he has also helped broker a number of ambitious initiatives, including a partnership with the city to expand the casino and build a history center dedicated to educating the community about the Ho-Chunk Nation heritage.
Brown shares what makes the region a welcoming community, why diversity is important and what the future holds for Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison.
What makes the Madison Region a welcoming community?
I believe the Madison Region is evolving toward being a more welcoming and inclusive community. Today, there is a more concerted effort by local business organizations and nonprofits to tackle the issue. I find that some people simply do not understand or are unaware of the challenges that BIPOC communities face. That’s why local BIPOC leaders are having, indeed leading, conversations about this.
Why is diversity so important?
Everyone understanding each other provides for a foundation upon which to forge ahead as a community. It provides truth as a basis for any decision-making going forward, and while that foundation will not guarantee that we all agree on matters that impact all of our respective communities, it will take away the fog of disinformation that tends to upend what could have been a more substantive discussion or debate.
Studies show very clearly that having opportunities for all communities will reap benefits that extend well beyond just a select few being successful. A diverse and successful community will continue to welcome people of all backgrounds, and that will be a boon for the Madison Region.
What do you envision for the future of Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison?
I envision these types of educational opportunities (such as the creation of a history center), especially for our young people, to assist in shaping perceptions and attitudes toward us, hopefully leading to a better world. Ultimately, I want the local community to be proud to have in their midst a people who have inhabited this region for 12,000 years.
