Both hospitals provide 24-hour emergency departments and leading-edge technology with the Da Vinci surgical robotic system, utilizing a minimally invasive approach resulting in quicker healing times. Vital Neighborhood Partner
Houston Healthcare is a vital partner in the welfare of the community and is actively engaged in educational and supportive health offerings.
The Community Education Department, known as EduCare, plays a key role in the work. It is staffed by professionals, including registered nurses and dietitians, exercise specialists, a lactation consultant and others. The team offers a variety of free classes for various ages to teach healthy cooking, fall prevention, childbirth, heart health, diabetes prevention and management, plus more.
“Research shows that people who receive education and support and who practice healthy habits have decreased medical costs and improved health,” says registered nurse Sheldon Maddox, director of Rehabilitation and Education Services for Houston Healthcare.
Other activities the health care system hosts incude a Senior Camp, Caregiver Conference and Diabetes Day. In 2022, Houston Healthcare launched the #HoustonHealthy 5K Race, Fun Run and Health Expo, with more than 200 participants. #HoustonHealthy is a community health care initiative to create more awareness of ways to stay well and prevent disease by posting a photo of these activities on social media using #HoustonHealthy.
Helping make sure quality health care is available for everyone, the organization has partnered with United Way of Central Georgia to support Pink Promise United to provide mammograms for women who may not have access to these important breast screenings.
Also, it has joined with Houston County government to open a new medical office building in the Bonaire area, located next to the new Houston County Public Safety Complex.
“We are pleased to meet the health care needs of the growing Bonaire community with a new medical office building, providing 16 private exam rooms, imaging and laboratory services on-site. To have the Public Safety Complex right next door will be a huge benefit for the health and safety of this community,” says Charles Briscoe, Houston Healthcare president and CEO.
Leading Women’s Care
The Pavilion Diagnostic Center, an outpatient facility associated with Houston Healthcare-Warner Robins and Houston Healthcare-Perry, have been been designated as Breast Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. A full array of comprehensive treatment options is available including 3D mammography providing clearer images that may help detect breast cancer earlier, screening and diagnostic ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy services.
The Warner Robins facility greets moms-to-be with board-certified physicians and a team that delivers over 2,000 babies each year. There are two special operating suites for C-sections, a Level II neonatal intensive care nursery, outpatient testing room and a classroom, all designed to give growing families strong beginnings.
Always with a hand on the pulse of its neighbors, during fall 2022, Houston Healthcare opened Houston Internal Medicine Associates to address the area’s need for primary care physicians.
Other specialty physicians include behavioral health; ear, nose and throat; OB/GYN; gastroenterology; urology and vascular.
“Houston Healthcare is committed to be a frontrunner in providing excellent patient care for everyone who enters our doors and working with our neighbors as a strong advocate to help them lead their best life possible,” Briscoe says.

Goal: Mammograms for All Women
One of the most important items in a woman’s wellness toolbox is having an annual mammogram, and Pink Promise United was created to make sure the breast screening is available to female residents in the region regardless of income, insurance or transportation.
When the Susan G. Komen Foundation – a national funding and research voice in the fight against breast cancer – withdrew from the region, the United Way of Central Georgia created Pink Promise United in 2018 to fill the void. The program provides mammogram screenings and readings for women in 15 Central Georgia counties who are uninsured, underinsured, low-income or otherwise unable to access health care. Additional diagnostics may also be covered as well as assistance with transportation, with a total of $7,500 in gas cards utilized to meet this need.
It’s a notable cause considering that the most common form of the disease in women in the U.S., aside from skin cancer, is breast cancer.
Promises Fulfilled
Since the program began, over 1,500 women have been screened for breast cancer, with 88 of them needing further treatment. Last year, 93 women in Houston County received the lifesaving care.
Pink Promise United is a collaborative effort, with the mammograms being provided by Atrium Health Navicent and Houston Healthcare.
“We are excited to partner with Atrium Health Navicent and Houston Healthcare as we work to expand the impact of Pink Promise United,” says George McCanless, United Way of Central Georgia president and CEO. “Working directly with them will allow us to extend the availability of our Pink Promise United funds to even more uninsured or underinsured women in Central Georgia.”
Patients of First Choice Primary Care, Houston County Volunteer Medical Clinic, Macon Volunteer Clinic, Community Health Care Systems and the Department of Public Health are automatically screened for eligibility. Uninsured or underinsured patients of other primary care providers simply need to discuss eligibility with their service provider when making their mammogram appointment.
“Houston Healthcare is excited to partner with United Way to help meet our community’s health care needs,” says Charles Briscoe, United Way of Central Georgia board chair and Houston Healthcare president and CEO. “We are extremely grateful to be part of the Pink Promise United initiative that provides immense benefits to so many women throughout Central Georgia.”
Slightly more than $364,000 has been made available to help women by the Pink Promise United initiative. The ACE Classic, a day of tennis, bridge and golf, takes place each May. The event helps raise funds and awareness and is supported by the Butler Automotive Group.
