Top 100 Best Places to Live in the US in 2026

Find Your “Everything” City

You want it all: a career you love, a home you can actually afford and a community where you’re more than just a number. But in a world of shifting economic tides and rising costs, finding that “sweet spot” feels harder than ever.

At Livability, we’re experts on what makes cities great places to live. We’ve spent more than a decade curating our annual list of the Best Places to Live in the U.S. to help you discover where you can truly thrive. We’ve done the heavy lifting, so you don’t have to. Our 2026 list highlights the small- to mid-sized cities where your paycheck goes further, your commute is shorter and your quality of life comes first.

How We Choose the Best Cities in America

To build this list, we commission proprietary data on thousands of U.S. cities and then sort through it all. We partnered with Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS) to curate our Top 100 Best Places To Live and analyze more than 100 data points in eight essential categories to measure a city’s overall health and “fun factor.”

  • Economy & Housing: We prioritize affordability by comparing average rents and home prices to local incomes.
  • Amenities & Environment: We measure the “fun factor” alongside air quality and green space.
  • Safety, Health & Education: We evaluate the vital infrastructure that keeps your family safe and supported.
  • Transportation: We look for places where you spend less time in traffic and more time living.

Because we recognize that Americans face a higher cost of living than ever before, our 2026 algorithm gives extra weight to the Housing and Cost of Living category to reflect today’s economic climate.

Why the Livability Top 100 Is Built Differently

There are plenty of “best places” lists out there, but ours remains the only one truly centered around accessibility and affordability. Here is how we set ourselves apart:

  • The $500K Ceiling: We exclude cities with median home values over $500,000. If it isn’t attainable, it isn’t on our list.
  • The “Sweet Spot” Size: We only feature cities with populations between 75,000 and 500,000 – large enough for big opportunities, small enough to feel like home. To us, this is the perfect size for getting plugged in and feeling at home fast.
  • Data-Driven, Human-Centered: We evaluated partnered with Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS) to analyze more than 2,000 cities using nearly 100 data points, making our list thorough and robust with something for everyone.
  • Unranked & Personalized: Because your “perfect” isn’t someone else’s, we don’t rank 1 to 100. You control the algorithm using our interactive filters to find your own No. 1.

You Decide What’s Next
